“Desktop Publishing” Comes to TV: Customize Stock Video for Small Biz Spots

An interesting new site/business called Spotzer (still in “alpha” as in not fully ready for business) is offering a way for small businesses to cut costs of TV/cable commercial production. It has categories of animations and stock video that you can browse, then they’ll help you customize them. Then you give some info on your business, plan and buy media… launch, then measure and evaluate your campaigns.

For a few hundred dollars licensing (not including media spend) there is raw video for local law firms, real estate firms, financial services, automotive, computers, health and health care small businesses are among the categories of ads you can browse then customize. They even give video professionals and hobbyists the opportunity to submit clips for consideration and sale on the site.

It’s an interesting evolution of the stock photo business moving into motion/video. But it’s also more than that… much like desktop publishing gave the average small business owner the ability to create their own ads. This allows the absolute non-professional the ability to create their own cable spots. But just like most of us in the business can generally tell if an ad has been created by a template, you’ll likely be able to tell here. 8-)

I’m impressed that they include measurement and evaluation as a core step in the creation process, it’s a very good sign. I’ll be paying attention to this to see how it goes.
