A little sun, dirt and a lot of satisfaction.
I had a great time this weekend… away from the computer. After a “long” Austin winter, it was really great to get out in the sun, get dirty and work with my hands. Spring is here in Austin, and that means weeding, mowing, trimming and general lawn care.
Although this is the first lawn I’ve had as an adult, the first business I founded was a lawn care company, when I was about 12 years old. “All-Star Lawn Care” …I remember hand painting the sign I posted in our front lawn.
I started out renting my family’s mower, then I made enough to buy my own yellow and green John Deere mower and a cheap edger.
I had a great time with that business, I woke up every weekend excited about the work I could do and the money I could make. I eventually made enough to buy a used mini-motorcycle, a Honda Mini-Trail 70. I think I dumped it my first week after running into a tree. 8-)
Thinking back on how excited I was about that business and my sense of accomplishment, I realize that I’m still that excited about what I do everyday. I’m excited about the potential for the web in so many ways, personal, corporate, entrepreneurial, philanthropic and just plain human communication and understanding.
I wake up everyday with new challenges, ideas and opportunities to keep me on my toes. What more could I ask for in a career?
(But I do still wish my wife would let me buy another motorcycle, I promise I’ll keep it away from trees! 8-)
